US and Greece to in talks to extend Defense deal

The US and Greece are discussing their five-year extension to the defense deal instead of the annual renewal of the defense deal now in force. If the defense deal is extended up to five years, both nations will not have to renew the agreement on an annual basis, said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

With the extension of the agreement, the US can make its presence in the areas of Greece, which it did not have earlier. This agreement would be the best deal ever, said Mitsotakis.

Earlier, in 2019, the US and Greece had signed an agreement that allowed the US military forces to use broader facilities of Greece.spends over 2% of its national output on defense. In 2020, as a part of improving its military capabilities, the PM had announced ambitious arms spending program that aimed at incorporating 15,000 additional troops, frigates, missiles, and aircrafts used in warfare.

Now the extension of the defense deal will allow both nations to plan better for future missions and improve military capabilities at the technology level.The defense agreement will be signed for a five-year term which will see increased US presence in Greece. If the defense deal is extended up to five years, both nations will not have to renew the agreement on an annual basis, said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
